Craig Brown is a senior engineer at MEA Forensic with over 30-years of experience. From the firm’s Vancouver office, Craig investigates automobile collisions and works on product and occupier liability cases. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He is registered as a professional engineer in BC and Alberta and has given expert evidence in court many times.

Craig reconstructs crashes involving a wide variety of vehicles, from heavy-trucks to bicycles. A motorcyclist for much of his life, Craig’s experience helps him identify the unique issues associated with reconstructing motorcycle accidents. “Speed is often the focus of our investigation,” he says. “but other factors can play a role, including road conditions, and visibility.”

Before joining MEA in 1987, Craig designed industrial equipment. Because of this experience, he investigates machinery failures.

Accidents involving stairways, ramps and guardrails are the focus of Craig’s occupier liability work. “I look at whether there was a design, construction or maintenance deficiency and whether it affected the accident,” he says. Craig is continually in the throes of renovating his heritage home, providing hands-on experience with construction practices. He also understands BC’s building code and how it has changed over the years. “It’s not today’s building code that really matters,” he says, “it’s the code from when the building was built.”

Craig provides clients with straight answers and a robust analysis of the physical evidence. “I get satisfaction out of finding the key piece of information that helps a client resolve their claim,” he says.

    Responsible for analysis of motor vehicle accidents, including examination of vehicles and accident scenes. Cases have included automobiles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Issues addressed have included vehicle speeds, pre-incident vehicle paths, sequence of events, evasion potential, driver identification, and seatbelt use and effectiveness.
    Investigate slip and fall cases, with an emphasis on stairway hazards. Assess compliance with applicable building codes and bylaws. Identify safety hazards.
    Also investigate machinery failures and vehicle and equipment fires. Qualified and has given expert evidence as a Mechanical Engineer in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, the Provincial Court of British Columbia, and the Provincial Court of Manitoba.
