Motor-vehicle rollovers cause disproportionally high rates of fatalities and catastrophic cervical spine injuries. To prevent these injuries, a better understanding of the underlying injury mechanics is needed.
Given that the risk of neck injuries in rollovers may vary with the initial head posture and neck muscle activation when head contact occurs, it is crucial to investigate these conditions in-vivo. Thus, the goal of this study was to develop a dynamic rollover device to test human subjects and to quantify the repeatability of the device using an anthropomorphic test device (ATD).
Once commissioned, this system will be used to capture the cervical spine posture and neck muscle activity in human subjects up to the point of a potential headfirst impact in a rollover crash. These posture and muscle data represent important boundary conditions that can then be used in future cadaver tests and computational models aimed at preventing catastrophic neck injuries.
