Brad Heinrichs presents his research on measurements taken using iOS-based lidar at WCX Digital Summit

In April, the biggest thinkers in mobility meet at the SAE World Congress Experience Digital Summit to present the latest innovations driving the community forward as well as strategies to overcome the automotive industry’s biggest hurdles. The theme of the 2021 WCX™ Digital Summit is: Autonomous. Connected. Electrified. On Wednesday, April 14th, MEA Forensic’s Brad Heinrichs will present on Bias and Repeatability of Measurements from 3D Scans Made Using iOS-Based Lidar, as part of the Occupant Protection: Accident Reconstruction – LIDAR AND PHOTOGRAMMETRY session.

Apple introduced a lidar-based depth sensor and enhanced Augmented Reality (AR) application programming interface (API) to the 2020 iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro, making widespread use of 3D scanning possible. Brad Heinrichs and Mike Yang of MEA Forensic quantified the bias and repeatability of the 3D scans made using this system, and their research was published by SAE International on April 6th, 2021: Bias and Repeatability of Measurements from 3D Scans Made Using iOS-Based Lidar.

Lidar and photogrammetry continue to play key roles in accident reconstruction. Continuous developments and validations are key to helping practitioners feel comfortable with the technology so that they can rely on it. During this Wednesday sessions, the presenters will be exploring three papers that introduce us to a new lidar tool and to validations of photogrammetry for specific use cases. Brad Heinrichs will present the above research at 11 AM Eastern.

Attendees can join the live session, or access the presentation — as well as 700+ others — on-demand for three months post-event. Use Brad’s presenter code TWENTY21 to get 20% off your registration.

The Society of Automotive Engineers’ WCX™ World Congress Experience is the mobility industry’s anticipated annual event for forward-thinking engineers, executives, OEMs, suppliers, decision-makers, disruptors and the entire spectrum of the mobility-engineering field.
