Dennis Chimich has cheered for both the UofA Golden Bears and the UofC Dinos, having obtained his Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta, and his Master’s in civil engineering (biomechanics) at the University of Calgary. Since then, he has worked on thousands of cases during his forensic career and testified as an expert witness in court on multiple occasions. He is currently studying the accuracy of tribometers, used to measure surface friction when investigating slip and fall incidents. This work contributes to improving the tools used by experts in fall investigations. He has also been involved in research on the impact performance of helmets, whiplash, occupant kinematics, and knee injury biomechanics.

Kurt Ising leads the firm’s research into how drivers, riders and pedestrians detect, perceive, and respond to hazards. Kurt’s interest in human factors started with research into how far away drivers can see pedestrians at night: He developed a method for measuring light levels at an accident location and objectively assessing driver visual performance. Since then, he has published peer-reviewed research on nighttime visibility, perception-response time and the effects of driver distraction. His connection with Alberta transcends his professional engagements: he got married at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton.

Mark Bailey leads both our Aviation and Failure Analysis groups in Vancouver. He has investigated thousands of accidents, failures, and losses over the last 30 years, determining root and contributing causes of failures in aircraft, vehicles, industrial equipment, building components, and consumer products. His background in mechanical and metallurgical engineering and his expertise in a range of techniques such as microscopy, metallography, fractography, stress analysis, and simulation make Mark a key asset in product liability cases. As far as we know, Mark is the first (and only?) to ever be qualified as an aviation crash expert in the Provincial Court of Alberta in Didsbury.
