In April, the engineering community convenes on mobility’s biggest challenges and opportunities at the Society of Automotive Engineers’ World Congress Experience (SAE WCX) in Detroit, Michigan. The theme of the 2023 WCX™ is: Driving Industry Transformation. On Thursday, April 20th, MEA Forensic’s Ian Miller will present on Decelerations for Vehicles with Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) on Dry Asphalt and Concrete Road Surfaces. His presentation is part of the virtual Occupant Protection: Accident Reconstruction section of the Technical Sessions.
“Understanding how quickly a vehicle can stop is essential in our line of work”, explains Ian. “It is a factor we need to consider when calculating the speeds of cars at impact, or analysing avoidance scenarios. Anytime we can move from using a hypothetical or an estimated value to using a value based on real-life data in our calculations, it removes uncertainty and adds precision.” Over the past year, with a team of other MEA Forensic researchers, he led a study modern anti-lock brake systems (ABS), conducting more than 400 braking tests. Through their efforts, the scientists not only updated the pre-existing data set but also doubled its size, providing valuable insights into the performance of modern ABS. Ian presented his research to over 380 attendees at the SAE Accident Reconstruction Digital Summit in March, and it was published by SAE International on April 11th, 2023, under the title Decelerations for Vehicles with Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) on Dry Asphalt and Concrete Road Surfaces.
The WCX 2023 event, developed by over 4,000 industry volunteers and experts, features more than 200 sessions across 11 different topics covering the latest technical advancements and regulations impacting the industry. The Occupant Protection: Accident Reconstruction program consists of written papers focused on the latest research related to methods and techniques for reconstructing vehicular crashes involving wheeled and tracked vehicles, pedestrians, and roadside features. The program emphasizes the use of experimental data and theoretical methods to identify, interpret, and analyze physical evidence from vehicular crashes.
