The National Academy of Forensic Engineers holds its 2023 Summer Conference from July 14-16, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri. Mark Bailey, our expert in failure analysis, presents on forensic engineering investigations of low-clamp-force type wheel separations on Saturday afternoon, at 3:00PM.
Wheel separations are rare events but can be disastrous. They are a common non-operator cause of damage and injury in road transport systems. Mark has studied why wheels fall off moving cars and trucks. The research on wheel separation conducted at MEA Forensic positioned the firm as leading experts on the topic.
“In 98 investigations, I have observed wheel separations due to axle, bearing, or fastener system failures. Fastener system failures dominate, with the root cause often related to low fastener clamp force,” Mark explains.
At the NAFE Summer Conference, he will present a purely deductive argument that confirms or refutes a low-clamp-force type wheel separation. Later, he will offer some weak and strong inductive arguments that attempt to explain low clamp force, including known wheel installation-to-separation distances from 47 of his wheel separation investigations.
