On May 7th, 2021, the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia hosts a virtual seminar on brain injury. The daylong seminar will explore the impact of brain injury on clients, the legal protections and challenges one needs to be aware of when acting for a brain injured client, and the pitfalls and hurdles they can’t miss. MEA Forensic is happy to support this educational program chaired by Barbara Webster-Evans and Guy J. Collette of Brain & Injury Law at Collette Parsons Corrin, and Dr. Jacqueline Purtzki from Paediatric Rehabilitation Consulting.
Dr. Purtzki opens the ball with an explanation of the neurology behind competency. Attendees will get a basic understanding of the neurological basis of decision making and the common types of injuries and conditions affecting the process. They will be armed with key questions to ask their clients if a competency issue is suspected. Following Dr. Purtzki’s presentation, attendees will learn about the Patients Property Act and professional liability issues that may arise when working with brain injured clients. Other topics covered include evidentiary issues, claims for incarcerated litigants, preserving & protecting settlements for brain injured litigants, and challenges when assessing capacity to give informed consent for MAiD, to name a few.
