Gabrielle Booth Co-Authors Advocate Magazine Article on GPS Evidence in Collision Cases

Gabrielle Booth, MEA Forensic Project Engineer, co-authored an Advocate Magazine article on GPS evidence in collision cases.

MEA Forensic Project Engineer Gabrielle Booth co-authored an article in the July 2026 issue of Advocate Magazine titled “GPS Evidence in Collision Cases.” The article was co-authored with attorney Kristopher Peerali and examines how GPS data can be used as evidence in collision cases, including the importance of understanding the accuracy, precision, and limitations of data from consumer-grade GPS devices.

GPS-enabled devices—including bicycle computers, smart watches, smartphones, fleet-management systems, and other connected devices—can provide information about time, position, and speed before, during, and after a collision. As this type of digital evidence becomes increasingly common, understanding what the data can reliably establish—and where uncertainty must be considered—is an important part of collision analysis.

The article draws on research conducted by MEA Forensic to quantify the accuracy and uncertainty of time, position, and speed data from consumer-grade GPS devices. Gabrielle has been involved in MEA’s research examining GPS data and has presented related research at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress. Her work has contributed to a greater understanding of how device characteristics, timing, location, and data artifacts can affect the interpretation of GPS evidence.

In “GPS Evidence in Collision Cases,” Gabrielle and Peerali discuss practical considerations for identifying, preserving, authenticating, and interpreting GPS evidence in litigation. The article also examines how GPS data can be used to evaluate travel paths, speed, timing, and other aspects of a collision while accounting for the uncertainty inherent in consumer-grade devices.
