In April, the global mobility community reunites in Detroit, Michigan, for the Society of Automotive Engineers’ World Congress Experience. The theme of the 2022 WCX™ is: Technology. Business. Connections. On Tuesday, April 5th, MEA Forensic’s Cole Young will present on Rollover and Near-Rollover Kinematics During Evasive Steer Maneuvers, as part of the Body, Chassis, Occupant Protection and Pedestrian Safety, Structure Technical Sessions – Occupant Protection: Accident Reconstruction.
Vehicle rollovers are complex events that can be difficult to reconstruct, and cannot be predicted using simple metrics. Cole Young, David King and Gunter Siegmund, of MEA Forensic, set out to explore whether different vehicle trip models could help identify when, during the trip phase, a vehicle possesses the dynamic conditions needed to rollover. The researchers have gained a better understanding of the factors involved in vehicle rollovers and, with further refinement, testing and validation over a wider range of vehicles and conditions, they believe that these metrics could be useful in some rollover reconstructions for identifying when sufficient dynamic conditions are present during the trip phase for rollover to occur. Their research was published by SAE International on March 29th, 2022: Rollover and Near-Rollover Kinematics During Evasive Steer Maneuvers.

The Occupant Protection: Accident Reconstruction sessions focus on the latest research related to methods and techniques for reconstructing vehicular crashes involving wheeled and tracked vehicles, pedestrians, and roadside features. Emphasis is placed on experimental data and theoretical methods that will enable reconstructionists to identify, interpret and analyze physical evidence from vehicular crashes. Cole Young will present the above research at 2:30 PM Eastern in Room 250 A.
