MEA sponsors OCTLA seminar: Bias in & out of the courtroom

The Orange County Trial Lawyers Association presented a seminar on the bias faced by female advocates inside and out of the courtroom on February 27, 2020 at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Dr Stephanie Bonin attended the event with Lois Kirchhoff.

The round table discussion was led by Hon. Deborah Servino, from the Orange County Superior Court, with Ashleigh Aitken Esq., Clare Lucich Esq., and Michelle West Esq., while Geraldine Ly of the Law Offices of Geraldine Ly acted as the Moderator. The group discussed a variety of topics:

  • Judicial Insight – bias in the Courtroom and how to respond it
  • Applicable Rules of Professional Conduct and Recent Case Law on Gender Discrimination
  • Inequality in pay, title, and opportunities
  • Client Bias; and
  • Best practices to reduce discrimination and bias

The Orange County Trial Lawyers Association (OCTLA) is a non-profit corporation that protects the rights of people who have been harmed by the wrongful acts of others. They provide education and training for attorneys; access to the collective resources, knowledge, and experience of the members of the Association; and promotion and support of laws that correct injustice and protect access to the civil justice system.
