Our research on injury comparisons between drivers and front-seat passengers in frontal collisions has been selected as a JFS 2024 Noteworthy Article — one of only 13 chosen from the hundreds of articles published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences (JFS) in 2024.
The study, “Injury comparisons between paired drivers and front-seat passengers in frontal collisions using publicly available crash and injury data,” analyzed real-world crash and injury data to examine whether the injuries of a belted front-seat occupant can reliably predict those of an unbelted passenger. The findings show that even when both front-seat occupants are restrained with seatbelts and airbags, their injury outcomes can differ significantly, challenging assumptions often made in legal cases.
