Tom Flynn attended the 33rd annual Congress of the European Association for Accident Research and Analysis (EVU), held September 25–27 at Transilvania University of Brașov in Romania. He presented “Accuracy of Estimated Speeds from Onboard Video Using Aerial Imagery as the Reference Geometry”, co-authored with Cole Young and Gunter Siegmund, which was awarded third best paper of the congress.
Match-moving analyses of onboard video are valuable tools in collision reconstruction, allowing experts to estimate vehicle motion by aligning dashcam footage with a reference geometry. The technique’s accuracy is well established when using 3D point clouds, but these are not always obtainable. In some cases, high-resolution aerial imagery captured by drones, aircraft, or satellites, may be available instead, yet its accuracy as a reference geometry has not been studied as thoroughly. To address this gap, Tom and fellow video analysis expert Cole Young quantified the bias and uncertainty of vehicle speeds calculated from dashcam video using aerial imagery as the reference geometry, providing valuable insight into the accuracy of this method. Their paper Accuracy of Estimated Speeds from Onboard Video Using Aerial Imagery as the Reference Geometry will be published in the EVU conference proceedings.
Tom also chaired a technical session on accident reconstruction during the congress, helping to guide discussion on new developments and methodologies in the field. Cooperation is a key focus of the EVU Congress, which provides a platform for accident researchers and analysts from across Europe and beyond to share findings and exchange ideas.
